Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse Trail
This is a six mile out-and-back trail that includes single track, as well as some wider areas, where you can run side by side and visit the majestic views of the canyon. When you get to the bike rack at about 2.8 miles, you will have to scramble a bit over some rock and sand, just before you arrive at a spot where the iconic Lighthouse structure comes into full view. There is just a bit more climbing before you reach the platform between the two structures- where you can take in the vastness of the canyon. This route will not disappoint! However, you want to plan ample time to enjoy the views and make sure to carry water as it gets smoking hot during the summer. You will also share this trial with hikers/walkers, mountain bikers and four legged friends.
Get Fit Half Marathon Route
The half marathon route starts at Get Fit and runs through some of the oldest neighborhoods of Amarillo. It first winds in and around the Wolflin area where you traverse cobblestone streets and take in some beautiful homes, nestled among huge shade trees. Next it passes by Amarillo College and the Oliver Eakle and Plemmons neighborhoods, then goes in front of the Historic Harrington Home. You then see the Polk Street Methodist Church and iconic Paramount Sign before turning onto the Historic Route 66, and to what we now call Sixth Street. You encounter a few hills as you pass West Hills Park and get to enjoy the well-manicured Amarillo Country Club golf course, before joining the Rock Island Rail Trail. As the route is winding down, you run on a portion of serene, expansive Julian Boulevard before finishing in front of Get Fit.
Tarantula Route at Rick Klein Park
This trail will leave you with a fun outline of a tarantula on your Stava that you can boast about to your friend!. The trail is about six miles long and winds around quite a bit, as you can imagine. It is mostly single track and flat, in an open area, with no protection from the West Texas wind. With that being said, it is a nice trail in town that is easily accessible. It is open to runners, walkers and mountain bikers.
Downtown Mural Run
The mural run is around three miles that starts on Polk Street in downtown Amarillo and takes in many of the recent murals that have found homes here. You will see the work of many talented local artists- be sure to bring your phone, because you will want selfies at most of these sites! The murals will include horses, bison, and rattlesnakes that portray the wildness of the Panhandle. You can also enjoy butterflies, a horned toad, coyotes and the “yellow Amarillo” mural that is a local favorite. The Barfield Autograph Collection Hotel is housed in a building that was built in 1927, and is also along this route on Polk Street. You might want to pop in after your run and check out the speakeasy! Make sure you plan enough time to take it all in, and just enjoy the sites that downtown has to offer.
